FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 16, 2018, New York, NY — Korea Art Forum is pleased to present KAF Artist Talk on Thursday, May 31 from 7 to 9 pm.
Filmmaker Christine Choy will talk about her documentary film, “Homes Apart, Two Korea,” dealing with the families who were separated since the Korean War (1950-1953). Choy followed a person to the North and then filmed her family in the South. The film is her personal journey with an international perspective.
Alicia Grullon, whose work is politically engaged, critically explores relevant issues of the present American society through performance, photography, and/or video. She will talk about her performance, Rule Is Love.
Jihoe Koo, a South Korean artist based in New York City, will discuss her recent poetic digital prints sharing her personal stories of raising children in New York City. Her work spans multiple media including printmaking, installation, and sculpture,
Nina Kuo - a painter, sculptor, and photographer - will discuss American racism and injustice through the stories of two Chinese-Americans: Danny Chen, who committed suicide in Afghanistan in 2011, and Vincent Chin, who was beaten in Detroit in 1982 and subsequently died four days later.
Lorin Chow Roser, an architect and inter-media artist who explores music and digital animation, will present a brief excerpt of his recent work LoftLoft4_360_lr, which explores issues of modernisation in global gentrified worlds. He envisions the Integration of the interior and the exterior worlds for future peace.
Dr. Gregory Sholette, an artist, activist, and author of Delirium and Resistance: Activist Art and the Crisis of Capitalism, and Art As Social Action (with Chloë Bass and SPQ), will explore his work, Our Barricades, addressing issues of political and economic justice in the Middle East.
This Artist Talk is organized as a closing event of the Korean Art Forum's newest exhibition, We The People. Inspired by the successful candlelight vigils that took place in South Korea at the end of 2016, the exhibition features unique, rarely and never-before seen works of art from North Korea, South Korea, and America. It offers access points to diverse perspectives of contemporary art, in which radically different artworks co-exist, compensating one another, depicting a fuller reality, and actualizing world harmony. The exhibition affirms an alternative model of transforming conflict between the U.S. and North Korea and is a call to the international community to support inter-Korean and North Korean-American art exchanges because art is a bridge to progress.
We The People and it's complementary programs is generously supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in Partnership with the City Council and co-hosted by OZANEAUX ArtSpace. Founded in 2013, Korea Art Forum (KAF) is an organization based in New York and led by artists with the mission of bridging the world through art. Supporters of Korea Art Forum include The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, LMCC, and the MCC UN Office, as well as individual donors.
OZANEAUX ArtSpace is a philanthropic, artist-run exhibition/project space created by Nikki Schiro and Frederic Ozaneaux in 2009. It hosts Contemporary Art exhibitions for Artists and Curators in the couple's community. The exhibitions highlight Artists from underrepresented demographics as well as foreign exchange. The gallery is planted in the back end of an accounting office, in the heart of New York City's Gallery District.
